What can you tell me about the Flower Birds of Paradise?

I know it's a tropical flower. Does it have a meaning such as red roses have a meaning? I believe they are expensive too.

What can you tell me about the Flower Birds of Paradise?
Bird of Paradise usually cost around 4-8 dollars a stem, depending on your area. You can get them in places such as Florida and California for much less because they are grown there year round. Their meaning is joyfulness. They come in different colors with the most popular being orange and purple. They got their name, obviously, because they look similar to the actual bird with the same name. Birds are long lasting flowers that, when kept in a warm location, their vase life is over two weeks.
Reply:Bird of Paradise plants are native to South Africa; they are so named because of their resemblance to a bird (such as a crane). They are quite easy to grow as long as you can give them the right conditions. While they are not tolerant of cold weather, they can easily be grown indoors.
Reply:I am in zone 9 on the coast in Texas and they grow everywhere and are beautiful right now...they are only expensive if you don't live where they grow...our local florists may use 5 or 6 in a tropical arrangement for less than 50.00.( along with ginger and other tropicals)

Reply:the plants are fairly cheap, but the cut flowers usally aren't. You usually see them in tropical bunches of flowers for "thank you" or "engagement parties" etc

Strelitzia nicolai which grows to a massive 4metres+ and has white and blue flowers
