Is this border line bad to wear to a wedding?

I just previously posted a question about no nos at a wedding, and it got me thinking! I was planning on wearing a simple floral dress to this wedding this weekend, and now that i think about it, it has a light cream color background. it is covered in lavender tropical flowers with leaves and stuff, but there is still a light cream color throughout the dress. is this bad?? will this break the no white / cream color rule? or is it ok because it is patterned? Should i find another dress?

Is this border line bad to wear to a wedding?
If the dress looks good on you WEAR IT!!!!!
Reply:It should be fine because it has patterns. All white or all cream colors would be bad. But if its a summer wedding, you'll be dressing lightly (color wise) especially if any part of it is outside.
Reply:I think that white rule goes for solid white. I totally wouldn't care if people wore a white dress with a pattern on it at my wedding. I mean, crap.. people better know who the bride is! lol!
Reply:You are totally fine. As long as the dress isn't all white or cream, you should be fine. Don't fret it, I highly doubt anyone would object.
Reply:Sounds like your dress should be fine (even thought that "rule" is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard)
Reply:Sounds very acceptable to me. I'd wear it.
Reply:I think the rule is for white - i.e., solid white.

Making my own Artifical Bouquets?

I want to make my own artifical bouquets... But i want brilliant blues and teals.... can you die the artifical flowers? or is there any sites i can pick out my own one by one i prefeer tropical flowers hibiscus or roses .... help would be great thanx!

Making my own Artifical Bouquets?
hobbylobby.com has a division called crafts etc that is really good. Garden Ridge used to be really good but i haven't used them in forever. If you choose to dye flowers yourself be careful, color matching is tricky. Have you thought of using the accents in the arrangement as the brighter colors and more natural colors for the flowers you like? There are more options for doing that than locking yourself into thinking that all the flowers in the arrangement have to be bright bright bright. good luck
Reply:yes you can die anything good luck nice hobbie
Reply:It depends on what the flowers are made of. If you have a store called Michael's near you, they have all kinds of artificial flowers that are very nice and they have many different colors. They also have a website to order from.

What are some good sites for silk bridal bouquets?

I want tropical flowers....

What are some good sites for silk bridal bouquets?
If you make your own, which is what I would do, Michael's has 40% off coupons every Sunday in the papers. This will help on cost.

Whatever you use try to use something that will fit into your home somewhere. Then you will enjoy it longer and get double the use.

Congratulations.
Reply:Go to AFloral.com and view. Great supplier.
Reply:To do them yourself: www.michaels.com

To get ideas: www.silkbouquets.com
Reply:Have you checked on eBay? Type in Tropical Flower Lot or bulk or wholesale. I haven't seen Tropical but they do have Bridal Bouquets that they sale in bulk so you would be able to do the whole wedding at a fraction of the cost of what a florist would charge.

Name some flowering trees for tropical climate????Thanks?
Hi:

Tropical climates are beautiful and there are some flowers that will work well for you.

Hibiscus

Clematis

Natal Plum

Angel Trumpet

Jasmine

Mandevilla

These are just a few. There are also other flowering shrubs that will do well in your tropical climate. I will link you to the tropical section of my website. Browse through and see if you can find some other plant specimens that you could use. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on website. There may be other plant specimens in the gallery of plants sections. There is a page on annuals and perennial flowers. Good luck to you and have a great day!

Where can i get bright, more that 1 color, informal bridesmaid dresses that would look right 4 a tropical wedd?

My wedding is in july and it is going to be a tropical wedding. I need some bridesmaids dresses that are bright but more than one color. I don't want them to be flashy or elegant. I prefer light blue dresses. I would love for there to be another color incorporated into it. light pink, orange(but not both pink and orange), or something like that would be wonderful. Even a flower print would be fine. but if it is a print, i don't want it to be little prints, i want it to be big prints and i don't want it to cover the whole dress. I once seen some bridesmaid dresses that were a light bright blue, almost aqua and that had a light pink rose underneath and in the center of the bosoms. they were beautiful. I do like simplicity. Like i said I want them to be INformal. Please help me!!!!!!!!

Where can i get bright, more that 1 color, informal bridesmaid dresses that would look right 4 a tropical wedd?
Actually, you might consider the orange and hot pink together, that is the hot combo this year for weddings! Very pretty!

Anyway, you should look at alternative sources for dresses. For example, I just did a wedding 6-30-07 and the bride got great dresses for the girls from the J. Crew catalog. They were bright green but they also came in pale blue. Also, large dept. stores such as Dillard's, Macy's, Foley's, etc. have multiple sizes in dresses %26amp; sometimes multiple colors. Also, if they don't have a particular size you need, they can call their other locations and check for you.
Reply:Check regular stores, like Ann Taylor, J Crew or Macys.
Reply:Hi. Well, I don't know if these are informal enough for you. But Alfred Angelo's "dream in color" collection is beautiful and does have more than one color. Here is the link:

or these long ones:

Of course you meant July 2008, right? By that time we'll have different styles in too, but some will remain in style.

Wedding Centerpiece Ideas for a tropical-victorian themed wedding?

I'm getting married at a Victorian mansion in August but I wanted to add a tropical flair to it since my fiance and I live in Miami and the wedding (and my family) will be in Indiana. The flowers I am wanting are very expensive so I'm trying to cut down on the cost by eliminating flowers in the centerpieces. Anyone have any ideas of how to make a centerpiece without flowers incorporating the tropical and victorian themes? Thanks!!! (10 for the best answer)

Wedding Centerpiece Ideas for a tropical-victorian themed wedding?
Since you're getting married in a Victorian mansion, you might consider taking a cue from Victorian exploration of the tropics. Have decorative maps, compasses, or other objects connected to exploration. Use swathes of netting (mosquito?) as tablecloths, table runners, or bows on other items. Add in a few big seashells and a coconut shell or so, and Bob's your uncle!

Have fun with bringing the two concepts of Victorian and tropical together.
Reply:I would use huge tropical leaves, and Victorian love letters and cut outs. All on large lace/crocheted doilies
Reply:I think truly tropical decor might look out of place in a Victorian mansion.

What if you incorporated your Maiminess with regional dishes from Florida like lots of seafood and salads.

You can also pick bright Miami colors and still fit with the location and burn ocean scented candles and things.

Add a few seashell touches here and there but I wouldn't make it really obvious considering where you are having it.
Reply:Use those really tall 3 armed candle holders ( I don't know what they are called) and drape topical flowers around them. I saw it in a brides mag.
Reply:What about some giant conk shells with just a few big flowers.
Reply:Uh thats a little too much! Victorian AND Tropical??? I say go to a beach or a more causal venue and do a tropical theme. When I think Victorian I think of lace, tons of flowers, and being formal. When I think of tropical I think fun, laid back, casual, party time, tons of crazy colors. I say go with one them or the other.

Pl. tell me whether papaya, banana, gauava, strawberries can be grown in northeast balconies?

I live in an apartment on the second floor. there are high rise buildings in front of our balconies. Very limited direct sunlight but plenty of shadeless brightness. the climate is hot summers and warm winters. pl suggest me tropical flowers, vegetables and fruits I can grow in my balconies- pots, growing bags and hanging baskets. thank you

Pl. tell me whether papaya, banana, gauava, strawberries can be grown in northeast balconies?
Bright light and partial sun/shade are two different types of light. If you want flowering and fruiting plants you must have more sun. Tropical foliage plants will do well. But if you want color you will be disappointed. There are a few varieties of Fuchsia that flower in the shade/morning sun.

Maybe you can arrange to start a rooftop garden, or use a small plot of land on the sunniest side of the building.

good luck
Reply:Do you live in the tropics? Strawberries are not a tropical fruit, so they are probably your best choice if you live in a place that freezes in the winter.
Reply:I live in Honduras and have bananas, papaya and guava all growing in partial sun. They don't do as well as the plants in full sun but they grow and produce. I have never tried strawberries.
Reply:Pick something else as these are full sun, tropical plants.

Any ideas for an Aussie themed room?

I'm redecorating my room with an Australian theme. The walls are a light pastel green, and I have some green and blue tropical flower sheets by Lilu on my bed. I have a boomerang above my bed and some shells on my desk. I've just recently ordered some prints of koala bears, sydney harbour, etc. I also have a raffia-like curtain on my window. It's starting to come together, but I still feel like it needs something. I would like to get a new lamp, but not sure what kind. Any ideas for what to add?

Any ideas for an Aussie themed room?
Contact the Australian Tourist Commision in NYC, if you live in the US, and ask them if they have any old promotional posters they would be willing to send you. You can have them framed and they will make great decorations. Some people think of the outback when they think of Australia and some people think of the Great Barrier Reef and the tropics. Sounds as though you are going for the tropics. You could also get a potted palm or two for your room.
Reply:Great idea for a theme. Can't think of much though . . . maybe a large scenery thing of Ayers Rock?
Reply:need kangaroos, platypuses(or however it is in plural), dingo?

Which spot would be better for a tattoo?

I'm turning 16 this year and am allowed to get a tattoo for my birthday. I want a tropical flower of some kind, but I'm not sure about where to get it. I either want it on my hip bone or on my right shoulder (more on my back than arm). Any ideas? I'm leaning more towards the shoulder since I do want children in the furture and I've heard tattoos on the hip bones tend to stretch out or get stretch marks through them. Thanks for your opinions!

Which spot would be better for a tattoo?
i think that the hip bone is a way cuter place for tattoos, but if you do plan on having kids i would get it on the shoulder. the shoulder is also a very cute place for a tattoo. :]
Reply:Get the tropical flower on kind of the front part of your hip/ lower belly. I don't think that like the one on the back because if your get dressed up for a special occasion it kind of looks out of place. It is probably easier to cover and show off something that is on your hip.
Reply:I vote right shoulder, too, for the reason you gave. While you're young, your tattoo on your hip will look GREAT, but after you have kids it will not look anywhere near as good. :)
Reply:Hip tattoos are said to be a lot more painful as well, so with it being your very first tattoo it may be smart to go with the shoulder.
Reply:Then if you planning on children..get it on your shoulder for sure...%26amp;%26amp; both places are easily covered up if you dont want anyone to see...I have 3 Tats!
Reply:I like the shoulder idea better. I've seen some tattoos covering strecth marks...not pretty
Reply:Go with your instinct - the shoulder seems like a good idea.

Hints or tips (perhaps cuttings) wanted on growing frangipani and other scented tree flowers?

Especially regarding growing such in pots. Also, I know these plants are tropical but if anyone has any suggestions about growing these in a cooler climate that would be fantastic.

Hints or tips (perhaps cuttings) wanted on growing frangipani and other scented tree flowers?
Easy done. I use these allot in landscaping. I am in Melb Aust, these plants grow in queensland etc. Firstly try to grow in pots its easier. Place them in a very sunny warm position preferably with a brick wall behind them. This will heat up and protect them from overnight cold. In winter you can cut the plant off at the base plus cut any long branches that have developed, rare in these plants as they grow slow in cold climates. These branches can be prepared for storage and will have lost most foliage. remove any left and wrap in newspaper. Once the temp comes back up you can re strike them in a sandy potting mix and off you got again. Alot of work. Easier is bringing them indoors in their pots and placing in a warm humid area. Try to avoid rapid changes in heat. Not too near heating but not near windows that will get cold overnight. Finally I have grow these outdoors throughout the year but not if you get freezes as this will kill them. The best spot outdoors are very sheltered with as much sunlight as possible particulary morning sun to expell the cold from the night.
Reply:I live in Central Florida and growing frangipani-- also known as plumeria-- is one of my hobbies. Here it is simple to start them. We just remove some of the canes, let them dry for a couple of weeks and then put them in pots and water well for awhile. Once they have taken root we transfer them to the ground or give them to friends. Or, just stick the canes in the ground and water.

Of course, if you are in a climate that freezes or comes near freezing, you will want to grow yours in a large pot on a rolling tray and give it Neptune organic liquid fertilizer.

Move it into a warmer area where it can get some natural sunlight. This plant goes dormant during the winter so don't worry about it when it loses all of its leaves as it is desiduous. In fact, many of mine will get a bloom head on them before they get leaves, in the early spring.

Down here, these plants can turn into large trees if the canes aren't selectively removed.

This plant can also produce seed pods--but rooting the canes is easiest.

People with a full back tattoo, how did you decide on your subject matter/design?

I have a great tattoo artist who I trust and is an amazing artist, I have been collecting pictures of things I like (artwork, pictures of tropical flowers etc) to take in and discuss with him but seem to have so many ideas I don't know what direction to take with it all and how to tie it together to make one great piece.

People with a full back tattoo, how did you decide on your subject matter/design?
I have a full back piece. I had a tribal sun that i needed to have covered up and I figured I might as well go big. I thought about it for a while and at the time I was reading Memoirs of a Geisha and then saw the movie. I loved the story behind the geisha and have always loved japanese artwork. I got together with my artist and we discussed what I liked and what would work to cover up the stupid tribal tattoo. The artist thought it over for a week and when I came back to the shop I had expected him to have some design drawn up. He surprised me by saying it is in my head...do you trust me? I said go for it! He did the entire tattoo freehand and when he was done I was amazed! I am going to go back since I think the clouds at the top should have some blue color in it since the entire tattoo is very colorful.

Boy did I ramble on and not answer your question yet....sorry....

My suggestion is take everything you got,,,the pictures....the ideas and sit down with the artist and discuss what will work. If he is amazing then he or she should be able to tie it all together. I am excited for you and hope it turns out killer. Good luck!!! There were times I just didnt want to go to the sitting cause it hurt.

I put a link to a picture of mine in case you wanted to see it. Peace!

Reply:Continue researching until you hit on a style or image that really appeals to you, (that means that everytime you look at it you love it even more) but also look at the reasons why these images were used/ what they represent, then come up with yer own theme, something important to you that feel you want to carry with you through life and then you'll start to form a concept and it will start falling into place! You've obviously found someone who's talent and judgement you trust, Great! They can help you with this! Good Luck! ;)
Reply:I go with my guts. i have a guitar on my back, a beer can on my left breast,a tattoo of elvis on my butt, several roses on my ankles, a few stars on my hands, and a beagle on my side.
Reply:If your first statement is true, then you shouldn't have a problem, Take all of your ideas, sit down with your artist. Give him or her your pictures and ideas and let the artist help you decide on a direction for this piece. He should be able to make your ideas a reality.

Rider (tattooed but not with a back piece)
Reply:I don't have a back piece (yet) but have a sleeve. I firstly decided on the main focal point (mermaid) and the rest of the ideas just flowed from there. My tattooist has been great at inspiring me and helping me to flesh out ideas. Hopefully yours should be able to help you do the same.

Good luck.

Is this a cute tattoo idea? Flowers???

I currently have one tattoo of a fairy on my left shoulder blade and I've been wanting to add to her or at least get another tattoo. My girlfriend's name is Rose and she is Polynesian so I was thinking of getting a rose and a tropical flower behind my fairy... and then as life goes on and I have kids I can get flowers to represent each of them... or if anyone in my life that is important ever passes away (God-forbid) I could get a flower as a memorial so that I could have lots of different flowers behind my fairy going down my back.

Cute or no?

Here is my fairy:

Is this a cute tattoo idea? Flowers???
I think it's an awesome idea! Representing your family through tattoo art is a great way to feel more connected to them without having tacky names inked on you. Plus, only you know what the flowers mean, and if you don't want someone to know what they are for then it's just a bunch of flowers. Good luck with it!
Reply:I love faires! Yours is cute.

Your add ons is a good idea...but continually adding to one tattoo.......where would you go with it, it would eventually have to go on your shoulder........I would think about getting a whole new tattoo instead of adding to the existing one.
Reply:The fairy is very cute, but I think that as time goes on you might get sick of all those flowers. It might get crowded or it might look pretty. Try having someone draw a couple flowers with a marker to see if you like it.
Reply:I think that it sounds great!! I think that as long as you do a tattoo that means something to you than that it all that matters.

Do you know the name of this blue flower?

I can't find a pic of it anywhere but it is almost a teal colour. Its shape is similar to a Bird of Paradise, I think but it is much smaller. I thought it might be a type of tropical flower that is dyed blue but I am not sure... all I know that it is a much different blue than most 'blue' flowers like hydrangeas, etc. Names and/or links to pictures would be greatly appreciated as I am using a dark teal as one of my wedding flowers and I thought it might look good for the boutonnieres.

Do you know the name of this blue flower?
Is it a lily or orchid?
Reply:Maybe a blue freesia, maybe a delphinium...you should probably go to a florist and ask because you'll need to order something they can get and they can suggest a lot of things.

What scents come to mind for the word "Tropical".?

I am in product development and would like some consumer imput. What scents come to mind when you hear the word "Tropical". The obvious answers are fruits and flowers. What else can you come up with?

What scents come to mind for the word "Tropical".?
Well, yes, the overwhelming associations are with fruits and flowers, as you say--------coconut, pineapple, lotus blossoms, lei garlands, etc.

But also perhaps some sea breeze scents, something sort of ocean-y.

And maybe also a sort of rich, earthy smell, something like patchouli, in a way, sort of loamy and "rain forest."

I would have to add that a sunscreen or sun lotion scent evokes a beachy or tropical feeling for me.

Using gas heat in winter flowers die?

i've got a lot of plants that die over the winter due to gas heat. my only source in the winter is to use gas heat. what can i do to prevent them from dying inthe winter? i would like to keep them alive...i 've gota rubber tree plant, and a tropical plant. and the ruber tree dies every year. I have even took them to my fathers house and they still die. i know that there is a simple resolution to keep them alive in the house. does anybody know what it is?

Using gas heat in winter flowers die?
Humidity is the answer. Any type of heat tends to be dry and result in low humidity in the house during heating months.

The plant's circulatory system is such that it supplies moisture to the leaves at the same rate as the moisture evaporates in the environment where it is native. Tropical plants are generally acclimated to humid conditions and so are conditioned to low evaporation rates. In very dry air the moisture evaporates faster than the plant can supply it and so the plant declines and may die if the condition persists.

Watering the plant will not help since its internal plumbing can't move water fast enough to make up for its losses. The answer is to create an environment around the entire plant that more closely resembles its humid native conditions and thus slow the rate of evaporation. Sometimes relocating to a bathroom or kitchen will help. For more demanding plants, a humidity tent or other enclosure may be necessary.
Reply:Put a humidifier next to them.
Reply:it has nothing to do with gas heat, unless you are putting these plants right on top of your floor registers. The rubber plant thrives inside. Maybe the best thing to do is go to your local library and check out books on the care of specific house plants.
Reply:Water and light is the answer
Reply:Definitely invest in a humidifier! Making trays that hold water but have plants resting on rocks above the water and not in it may help too. I also use a grow light and rotate plants around all winter.

What types of flowers would be the best?

We are getting married in Jamaica, just the two of us, and then coming back home to have a reception...what type of flowers would you suggest? Our reception is sort of leaning towards the beach/tropical theme, bright colors and is very informal, I was sort of thinking of topical flowers, but I don't really know what is considered "tropical" and would fit our theme.

What types of flowers would be the best?
I would go with gerber daisies!! They are bright colored and would look good with any type of theme!!
Reply:I would go more with birds of paradise (its a flower) and some palm fronds. Find out what is native to Jamaica and if it isn;t too expenseive, have those at your reception.
Reply:Look through bridal magazines and websites and find pictures of specific flowers you like. Take ideas to your florist and see what all would look good together. I love the tropical idea. I think any flowers can look tropical if you use tons of bright colors! I used hot pink gerber daisies and they are so fun. Maybe you would want the hawaiin flower hibiscus look. Just incorporate all your colors and splash your wedding with tons of bright flowers! :o) good luck!
Reply:Lillies came to mind as soon as i read your question. They come in tons of beautiful colors. I could see you using any pink color or even bright orange! I am using casablanca lillies for my wedding...my bouquet is going to have white ones mixed with burnt orange roses and my maids are carrying burnt orange casablanca lillies with beige mums. I LOVE lillies, they are so elegant and beautiful, and you could get away with them in your "tropical" theme because they come in many bright colors! Just talk to a local florist and they can give you tons of ideas! Good luck and congratulations!
Reply:Orchids and Bird of Paradise are pretty exotic. Shavebrush flowers are too. They look awesome and come in a great selection of colors. Palm trees, the mini ones, would be great too! Flower garlands of brightly colored blossoms would evoke a tropical feel as well.
Reply:Hibiscus flowers, stargazer lilies, orchids- those are the most exotic flowers I know.
Reply:Hey! Tropical is a great idea! Though Tropical flowers ARE more expensive than other types of flowers usually by a couple dollars a stem to a bunch. You can order Elephant Ear leaves (or find that in a friend's yard). Elephant ears are NOT palm fronds. They are more elegant than palm leaves. Birds of paradise (has orange red and blue/purple in it), Ginger, Stargazer lilies( usually has 2-3 tone colors) or love lilies (usually has one color) and last but not least Orange roses carry the tropical colors.

Also think about getting a few hibiscus topiary plants (with the flowers blooming) from like home depot or wal-mart to place here and there. And plant them in your yard afterwards as a memory to the great times!

Have fun! and by the way....gerber daisies wouldn't fit in the "tropical" theme real nice...it's more of a spring la-di-dah flower. but of course if it's what you want and you know it'll look good then go for it!

Where exactly can birds of paradise be grown?

I love the look of this tropical flower but I live in zone 6 (Western Kentucky) and I'm not sure it is the right place for them to grow. Can they grow here?

Where exactly can birds of paradise be grown?
keep it in a pot I live in San Antonio and have one outdoors for about 5 years lived through 25 degree and freezing rain it gets about 6 blooms a year

Reply:Inside in the winter, outside in the summer! Or, on a three season porch. With a little heat to keep it above freezing.

I say this because I live in Massachusetts, I work for a large East Coast garden center chain.

NOT Stupid home Depot or Lowe's, a family owned business!

Any how, because of the price of Oil , we have been cutting back on the winter heating. In Massachusetts we go between zone 6 and 4 so pretty cold!

The greenhouses are set at 55* at night and as warm as the sun gets during the day.

NO Birds have died, they just do not bloom until the summer season.

BUT, You cannot go much lower, so you cannot leave them in the ground ALL WINTER you must bring them into some shelter that is 50* or BETTER for the winter!

Is it rude or tasteless to give a gift (a painting) without a frame?

My teacher is a super high quality teacher. She is a perfectionist like me. I'd like to give her a high quality gift, so I started looking in my painting collection and found an acrylic of tropical flowers that I painted.

I just want to know since I haven't got the time to get it framed by 6 am tomorrow morning!! I would like to give it to her if it won't be a burden to her (that in order to hang it she'll have to put out about $75 to get it framed).. It is appropriate to give it to her wrapped in pretty paper wrap?

Is it rude or tasteless to give a gift (a painting) without a frame?
I don't think it's tacky. You can't know where she would hang it or what kind of frame would go well with her decor.

Also she knows you are a student, and would probably feel bad knowing you had put a lot into a frame.

I think that giving the gift of yourself, in giving her a painting of your own is entirely appropriate, and a wonderful way to tell her thanks for being such a super teacher. I'd put a card in to tell her words to that effect, so she understands the heart of the gift, which is the most important part. Then she can frame it in her own time and

to suit her own tastes.

Pretty paper wrap would be fine, just make sure the surface of the painting is protected with tissue paper and with stiff cardboard is necessary.

I think you are doing a lovely thing.

Maggie
Reply:it is not rude or tacky to give a painting without a frame...it is ready for framing in its stretcherbar, and we give and recieve many such gifts in our circle of talented artists...

not giving it in a frame allows the recipient to choose their own frame to match their own tast and the decore in the room inwhich it will hang.

an unframed piece is a piece from the heart.
Reply:Its not a matter of being rude, its a matter of taste and kindness...so its no problem at all, if you don't care other people's opinion about you.
Reply:That would be fine. Some people hang pictures unframed or they select a frame to go with their furnishings. that is a very nice gift.
Reply:No, it is perfectly fine.

In fact, the person receiving the painting usually wants to choose a frame that fits in well with her decor.

A nice paper wrapping is excellent.

Bistro
Reply:I think you would definately not want to frame it. The painting is the gift, and the frame is something she would probably rather pick out. She will want to fit the painting in somewhere, and choose the style. The best thing to do is allow her to pick our her own frame.

As far as "pretty paper wrap" I am curious as to your motives for giving any gift to a teacher. Be carefull that you don't cross the line and ruin your relationship with her. And as far as wrap goes, the best way is classy not pretty. Find something that is simple yet ellegant. Everyone can appreciate classy paper, but what you think is pretty she may think is wierd or tacky or worse, inappropriate.

What is a really good idea for a side (rib cage) tattoo?

Does any one have any ideas? Shooting stars look REAL pretty and also tropical flowers with vines stretching down is pretty too... Im a Girly Girl so nothng like skulls or anything like that thanks for helping!!!

What is a really good idea for a side (rib cage) tattoo?
Will you be a girly girl in about 5-10 years? That is one question you need to think about. I cover up a lot of tattoos like that. And can you handle pain a lot? Rib tattoos hurt like heck! I have a rib tattoo and I admit, I cried a little. It is the most painful tattoo I've ever had. Try going to your tattoo artist and asking them to combine shooting stars and tropical flowers into a design going up/down your ribs. We are good at stuff like that. But, only if you know you won't regret this and you know you can handle the pain!
Reply:sorry but no.
Reply:I'm planning on getting a phoenix in black in the same location! I like the idea of thinking of an image that says something about your life...maybe choose the flower based on the Victorian flower meanings?
Reply:what about poison ivy vines or a single long stemmed red rose bud?

What can you tell me about the Flower Birds of Paradise?

I know it's a tropical flower. Does it have a meaning such as red roses have a meaning? I believe they are expensive too.

What can you tell me about the Flower Birds of Paradise?
Bird of Paradise usually cost around 4-8 dollars a stem, depending on your area. You can get them in places such as Florida and California for much less because they are grown there year round. Their meaning is joyfulness. They come in different colors with the most popular being orange and purple. They got their name, obviously, because they look similar to the actual bird with the same name. Birds are long lasting flowers that, when kept in a warm location, their vase life is over two weeks.
Reply:Bird of Paradise plants are native to South Africa; they are so named because of their resemblance to a bird (such as a crane). They are quite easy to grow as long as you can give them the right conditions. While they are not tolerant of cold weather, they can easily be grown indoors.
Reply:I am in zone 9 on the coast in Texas and they grow everywhere and are beautiful right now...they are only expensive if you don't live where they grow...our local florists may use 5 or 6 in a tropical arrangement for less than 50.00.( along with ginger and other tropicals)

http://www.answers.com/topic/bird-of-par...
Reply:the plants are fairly cheap, but the cut flowers usally aren't. You usually see them in tropical bunches of flowers for "thank you" or "engagement parties" etc

there are two types Strelitzia regina which grows to about 1metre and has yellow/orange and blue flowers or

I know gardenias are out of season.

Other sweet smelling tropical flowers that are lovely at night are great too.

Suggestions?

MIAMI BRIDE: If I wanted to get either gardenias or jasmine for my November Miami wedding, could I?
Can't your florist get you anything you need.....I know my mom could. She worked miracles for me for my winter wedding in Vermont. My bouguet was gardenias.
Reply:You should be able to get *anything* you want, it may just depend on what you are willing to pay! Miami is a big place, so surely there are florists there who could have what you want flown in for your bouquet. Good luck! Sounds like a beautiful wedding!

Is there a connection between the Vikings and Native Americans?

I am intrested in learning about possile connections between the Vikings and the Native Americans. As a desedant of Vikings I am looking for a connections to how the Vikings came to draw tropical flowers. Thanks!

Is there a connection between the Vikings and Native Americans?
the tribe of the mandans ,subsequently wiped out by measles, had their lodges constructed in such a way they resembled viking lodges the mandans were'discoverde ' in the midwest approx1750-1800 there was a chap who went among and was an artist if you went to native americans and followed that line through you will discover why it has become common belief why the mandans are reputedly descendants of the vikings
Reply:Vikings were the first to land in North America to meet the natives in vinland.some scollars argue this point.
Reply:Discovery Channel had a program about the fact that all mankind originated in a primitive area of Africa. This area still has a tribe that has their own language. their genes were found in Asia, Europe India, Alaska ant American Indians. We are all brothers and sisters
Reply:How did you find your link to the Vikings? My father, deceased, swore that we are descended from Leif Erickson, and said the genealogy was researched in Salt Lake City, but I can find nothing. He said somethuing about the family being in the "kings Guard". Any idea what he is talking about?
Reply:While according to the Discovery Channel program, the Vikings did sail to Canada, I have not heard any proof they sailed further south.

The tropical flowers, could have come into Ireland by way of the The Gulf Stream. (I think that is the name.) Vikings definitely went to Ireland.

The Native Americans did not marry into the Viking population in the 800-1200s as far as we know. If in doubt try a DNA test.
Reply:The Vikings only visited the very far north region of North America, and only encountered what one would call Eskimos. They never stayed more than a few weeks on the few occasions they crossed the Atlantic from the Netherlands. The Vikings had a very strong distaste against the natives, and the feeling was mutual with the natives. so I doubt they ever hand a very strong connection. The tropical flowers designs probably were from experience with travelers from other parts of Europe, or may not be tropical at all.
Reply:The native american's were not even native to this land they actually came from asia a long time agon and there were also natives in south america. that is were all the natives in america came from. there is vast information on line. i will try to find the place that i read about that on and give you the link
Reply:I think there was a program on TV -History Channel maybe - about how there was a settlement of Vikings who settled around Nova Scotia, I think. Leif Erickson? They came from Greenland. That's the only connection I know to the Americas.

However, the Vikings were traders and conquerors who traded with far off places like Russia for example and even settled there. When the Vikings conquered what is Northern France they adopted French language and customs and were called Normans or "Northmen" and their country was Normandy. The Normans then went on to conquer Sicily and Southern Italy creating the "Kingdom of the Two Sicilies". I am not sure if they also traded with more tropical places perhaps in North Africa or Southern Spain.

Are the flowers in question only found in the Americas? If you could find out where the flowers grew, then you could trace the connection back.

Anyone know of a tropical fish that has a pattern on them that looks like a flower?

We were told it was a parrot fish, however, I can not find anything on the net that shows a parrot fish with these markings. The body is light yellow and on the sides the markings look like a flower with stem.

Does there exist a tree that only has flowers and no leaves?

Down in Puerto Rico (tropical) Ive seen a tree in a few ocasions that never has leaves. It only has this big yellow flowers (like big roses, but it has a hibiscus look too) at the end of its branches. I wonder does it ever have leaves.

Does there exist a tree that only has flowers and no leaves?
Some plants don't have leaves, but instead have photosynthetic stems. The cactus is an example of this kindof a plant. It also uses the succulent stem to store water. Parasitic plants also often do not have leaves or the the leaves are rudimentary and not used for photosynthesis. They extract food from other plants and do not need to make their own food.
Reply:I agree with christy. it has flowers and no leaves
Reply:I think cherry blossoms. It has flowers.

Around how long does dendrobium phalaenopsis take to bloom in tropical climate?

I live in the Philippines which is a tropical country, and my searches say that most flowering plants including orchids bloom from late summer to fall. I guess I won't find that information useful to me. My plants send new growth even before flowering, so not sure when they will bloom. If anyone can give additional tips, please do. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Around how long does dendrobium phalaenopsis take to bloom in tropical climate?
Hi there! I'm from P.I. too... Dendrobium phalaenopsis are very prolific bloomers, however the time when will your plant will bloom next is relative to the current health of your plant. If it is fairly healthy and is in a sunny position, a spike could be coming out in the next few weeks... however if your plant is quite thin, an application of multipurpose orchid fertilizer such as Gaviota or Siam would help! Btw, in my case orchids have no seasons, they bloom year round, however the peak is always in summer : )

Happy Growing
Reply:These orchids will start spikes after the current season's growth has matured. Usually in the fall here in the US.

They will also produce spikes on older canes.

What are the best flowers...?

to plant in sandy soil. I do not care for marygolds. But i want flowers that will stand out and look beautiful not dull. I also do not live in the tropics so most tropical flowers will not work.

What are the best flowers...?
Any flowers you find that are for sale at your local nursery or garden center will grow and flourish in your landscape. This is why they have these particular varieties available to the localized consumer.. However, with your sandy soil you will need to water "more" often, as the moisture retention in sand is nearly nil. To help with this you can mix in some good compost, peat moss, or topsoil before planting. Also, you will need to establish a good fertilizing program on a regular basis as sandy soils will not hold nutrients for any length of time. Available nutrients will "leach out" with every successive watering and become unavailable to the plants. Not all plants and flowers will do well in sandy soil. The determining factor is what growing zone you are in. That is why your nursery has the appropriate varieties available (they know)... A flower that grows well in a sandy soil in Minnesota will not necessarily do well in Florida...

...$Billy Ray$
Reply:Some plants are particularly suited to growing in sandy soils. Some plants may tolerate dry conditions, whilst other may need some watering over summer.

The addition of well-rotted compost or well-aged animal manure improves the moisture–holding qualities of the sand. This will encourage worms and continue to break-down and improve the soil, and also help prevent the soil from drying out. Only aged manures should be used.

Using organic mulches on the surface, or soil wetter, will help retain moisture as the surface of sandy soils tends to dry out and repel water rather than soaking it in.

The following plants will grow especially well in sandy soils and coastal environments. You should also ask your local Nursery for advice.

Recommend some flowers and plants for my garden?

I am new at this flower bed stuff and i dont know my flowers and plants very well. I love doing it but i need some information on different types of plants that grow well in arkansas. Please let me know what plant you like and describe it to me or send picture. Just trying to get ideas for my own gardens. I love gardening and tropical type plants, but i like all flowers really.

Recommend some flowers and plants for my garden?
Daylilies are a good choice as they are easy to maintain and come in a variety of colors. A mix of bulbs, spring and summer (tulips, Iris, etc) help to give color in down times. Sedum (tall variety with large flower head) gives you flowers in late fall and gives shape to your garden during the winter as well. One of my favorites is Lupin, depending on the variety they can be tall, short and a wide variety of colors. Another good one is Baptista, it looks almost like a shrub but gives excellent flowers, and year round form and interest.

Speaking of shrubs/bushes, one of the earliest blooming plants is Forsythia, vibrant bright yellow flowers make it stunning. Lilacs are excellent not only for scent but for color. Burning Bushes are also fun as they give excellent fall and winter color and if you look closely, they actually have green flowers. There are also evergreens like Rhododendron which will give you interest year round as well as flowers.

Check with your local nursery for varieties of these plants that do best in your area.

Is it possible to grow sun flower and lavender in tropical area with high humidity?

I wanna grow some in my front yard, that would be lovely if it's possible.

Is it possible to grow sun flower and lavender in tropical area with high humidity?
It should be possible to grow both as long as they are planted in an amended soil that is water retentive. Both do like the sun. You could also add a layer mulch to keep the roots cooler. I would suggest that you consider planting a dwarf variety of sun-flower which grows 3 to 4 feet. The standard varieties grow to 6 or 7 ft. plus, and often need to be staked which may not look too pretty in a front yard; but that too depends on where you plan to plant them. Just something to keep in mind.
Reply:As long as you get enough sunlight, you can grow sunflowers. I had some in Hawaii. Lavender I'm not sure of.
Reply:no not well without either plant suffering or simply rotting
Reply:Absolutely!!!!! They should grow very well there! They both love sunlight... and I think humidity too...

Good luck!
Reply:yes it will grow very well there they love the high humidity and the heat also
Reply:yes you can but you know that sun flowers are pretty but once they get big and mature they turn black. are you sure you want that/
Reply:sure. as long as they get heaps of sunlight

What are some ideas for "tropical" decorations for a reception??

We are getting married in Jamiaica and want to bring the fun home at the reception and want to keep it tropical..any ideas on flowers, table decor, anything??

What are some ideas for "tropical" decorations for a reception??
I just did a tropical wedding--though we were on a tight budget. I used glads for the table decorations, and hibiscus flowers to place on the buffet, gifts, and favor tables, tied to trees, everywhere!

I wanted it to look like an island so I had the tables in a circular pattern. The outer tables were the buffet tables, the bar table, the gift table, and the table I put the favors on. They were covered in lime green with a darker lush green sheer on top. The middle tables were all a Carib blue/turquoise. The front tables (parents table, sweetheart table, cake table) were all a coral color. I used sand napkins. On the tables I had those flat marbles mixed with river rocks surrounding the arrangement.

For flowers, I only used glads cause they came in all the colors but werent that expensive. Orchids are tropical but really expensive. Birds of paradise flowers and ginger are very tropical though semi-high cost so I used them just in a few places on the head tables. Callalillies also come in "flame tipped" to have yellow and orange. I used a lot of tiki torches in my decorating too. Plus some pictures of island scenes so that when you were standing at the door the whole room seemed very Carib island.

The tiki torches added a nice touch around the tables. For favors I had candles in scents like Mango Daquari, Pina Colada, and Ocean Lagoon. I also kept the theme in my cake with coconut flavored cake with mango icing.

The thing with tropical is to remember the hot colors like fushia and orange and yellow--mixed very evenly with the bright but cool colors of greens and blues. And what looks really bold in the store won't look quite so extreme in the reception with the dim lighting.

Tropical is a gorgeous theme. I had a luau for the rehearsal dinner--they had a roasted pig (called BBQ in the south where I live) and lots of fruit. Especially pineapple (even though thats not very Carib). That would have worked at the reception as well. For Jamaica I'd consider some sugarcane or pictures of sugarcane. And pretty rum bottles to place around as decorations. They have some nice handpainted ones down there that you can get rather cheaply. If you use the rum in your punch, the bottles make great table decor.
Reply:try some shells and tropical flower buds in a glass fish bowl with water, maybe even add a colorful beta fish
Reply:birds of paradise
Reply:Any florist will know the term "tropical" when referring to flowers. This will include bird of paradise, orchids, ginger flower, protea, heliconia, anthuriums, and more. If you ask me, the greenery chosen has just as much effect as the flowers. Just give your florist a price range, and they can better advise you on flowers.

For table decor, I would suggest some lei's or a little budvase with a stem of orchids, just keep it simple. People like to see the other people around the table when they are talking.

I had a "luau" party this summer and it was a lot of fun. I tend to know more about the flowers because I grew up in a flower shop, you you'd be surprised what a difference they make. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

Congrats on the wedding!

Reply:You can use coconut shells as candle holders.

See if you can find a "water sounds" cd, and have it playing in the background - not over the dance music, just a little something that you can hear when there's a quiet moment.
Reply:heh, im getting married in Jamaica too in March. (ocho rios) We are going to have the reception back at home. Im thinking a hog roast with tiki torches...although i guess it would be more tropical if the pig was cooked underground like a luau
Reply:I think it depends on how tropical you want it. My husband and I wanted a tropical/beach themed wedding but the venue we chose was so classic and old world looking (it was an old brick packing house) that putting in bright colors and luau styled stuff would have taken away from that. Instead we used subtle touches such as our flowers, we had orchids. Our favors were white treasure chest with chocolate coins in them with a sea shell ornament that was attached to a ribbon with our names and date on it. Our center pieces were rose bowls with sand and water in them, we placed sea urchin skeletons in the bowls and topped them with flowers. We sprinkled shells and sand dollars over all the tables and for a touch of color, our cake was decorated with bright purple dendrobium orchids. Our cake topper was hand made for us out of exotic wood shaped into surf boards, one was a long board to represent my husband, one was a short board to represent me. It turned out nice, enough to show our theme was beach/tropical like but not too much it came out like a cheesy luau. Have fun and do whatever you'd like, and there are many things to make it tropical, it's all in how much you want to make it. Use bold colors and lush greens for the flowers, I think the flowers are the most beautiful part. So have fun and congrats!
Reply:Use lighted palm trees throughout the reception area. Colorful floral leis on the wedding table. Tropical fruit arrangements. Bold bright colors for table coverings. Maybe some palm or pineapple guest soaps for favors. Don't forget to have a couple of flamenco birds nearby. Perhaps some orchids in the wedding table centerpiece. Candles in tropical fruit shaped holders on guest tables. Oh my - the possibilities are endless! Even a smattering of sand on the dance floor if possible!
Reply:You can buy the fake lei flowers at any party store. table deocr woulsd be a bright yellow, green or blue tablecloth with confetti on it. You can play reggae music (Bob Marley) in the background. I would serve finger foods with a big bright fruit tray with pineapple, mango and papayas, and tropical drinks: pina coladas, mai tais, colorful drinks. You could have it outside and use the tiki torches for light! Your dress code could be sandals and Hawaiian shirts! I think the most important feature would be to have bright colors and blues of the waters to bring out your surroundings.
Reply:Conrats! When my hubbie and I married, we had a beach themed wedding since we live at the beach and his parents live on the Intercoastal Waterway and have their own private dock and pier...you have gotten a lot of great answers (some of the best I've seen in the forum lately!) but I would like to add maybe ask your guests (and you and your groom) go barefoot...and ask the guests to wear a Hawaiian-style shirt or dress...our cake had icing the color and texture of sand with sea shells in icing also..and we had bought a beautiful real sea shell for the "topper"...finger foods, dancing, and tropical drinks help add to the atmosphere...we also got "lei's" made of sea shells to give each guest as they entered...and we gave guests little bottles of bubbles (decorated with small sea shells) to blow at us instead of rice...(know the song "tiny bubbles'???!!..by Don Ho...the Hawaiian singer...??)...put some beach towels down instead of regular table cloths and have some hula-hoops available for fun...

I hope you have a wonderful day you'll always remember...

Reply:Most people think 'color' when they think tropical, so you can do a lot with simple colored table cloths. I saw a reception where they used two table cloths on each table so they could angle the top cloth where the opposing color underneath would also show. They used silk flowers to keep costs down compared to real flowers - big, splashy, bold flowers in plain clear glass vases with shells in the bottom. Go to a party store and get drink umbrellas. Even if your reception will be non-alcoholic, you can still spear a piece of pineapple with a drink umbrella and put them in your glasses of punch. Have fruit kabobs. We had these at my nephew's reception and they were just strawberries, apple chunks, pineapple chunks and a big slice of banana skewered onto wooden kabob sticks. You have to use Fruit Fresh or the equivalent to keep the fruit from turning and, of course, you can't bring out ahead of time like you can with a cake, but these were really popular. Freeze your ice for the punchbowl in a pineapple mold. Tell your guests the reception will be a tropical theme and they may dress accordingly. People standing around in Hawaiian shirts and sandles will convey your theme better than anything you put on your tables anyway.
Reply:Stick to bright, fun colors and anything you do will have a "tropical" feel to it.

Does anyone own a LETTERMAN painting. Mine is tropical birds and flowers on a green canvas. Value??

Hey codyodeo,

I checked Absoluteart.com, and Letterman did not come up as an artist they have in their database. Here are some other places you can check. You can correspond with some of these sites, or even give a phone call.
